New 3D renderings of Apple’s cheaper iPhone
Earlier this week, we shared with you design schematics of the cheaper iPhone based on what case makers have heard from their sources. Today, Apple Insider has posted 3D renders of the device based on these schematics, giving us a good idea of how the cheaper iPhone might look like. The main characteristics of the cheaper iPhone, in case you’ve not been reading rumors lately: Almost the same dimensions as the iPhone 5, just that the body is less than a millimetre wider and taller. The screen size will be the same at 4 inches The device will be 0.8mm thicker than the iPhone 5S It’ll have curved edges, just like the iPod touch The volume buttons will be pill shaped, and not circular like the iPhone 5 The body will likely be made of plastic, and might resemble the iPhone 3GS Here are the renders: Tell us what you think of the renders in the comments below. How to check if your iPhone is Unlocked or Not
Having your iPhone locked to a carrier can be a pain if you need to switch SIMs. Especially while you’re travelling, and you try slipping in another SIM card only to find that you’re blocked from using it. Knowledge is power, and to be forewarned is to be forearmed. Here’s how to find out, in advance, if your iPhone is locked to your carrier or not. The basic method The easiest way is to get a spare SIM card, from a different network to your current provider, and try it in your phone. A few minutes after changing the SIM cards – you should reboot your iPhone to be sure – you will see the new network name in the status bar if your phone is unlocked. If your phone is locked, you’ll get a pop-up error asking you to insert a valid SIM card. You should do this sooner rather than later if you will be travelling. You don’t want to be stuck in a foreign country and not be able to buy phone service! The online method If you can’t get hold of a spare SIM card and you need to know whether you’re locked or not, there’s a website that can help. IMEI.info can access a public database of IMEI codes which tracks which phones in the world are carrier locked or not. To use this service, you’ll need to obtain your iPhone’s IMEI code – which is a code that is unique to your device. If you have a SIM card installed, and only if, you can see the IMEI code by dialing *#06#. Alternatively, you can plug your iPhone into your Mac or PC and start iTunes. On the device Summary screen, you’ll see a line showing your phone number (the line below the phone’s data capacity). Click on the phone number, which will reveal the IMEI code. The IMEI code is also engraved on the back case near the bottom in case of some iOS devices like the iPhone 5 and the original iPhone or engraved on the SIM card tray in case of the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Once you have the IMEI code, return to IMEI.info and input the code. You’ll see a table of basic information about your model of phone. Some details may be incorrect. For example, it reported my 16GB iPhone 5 as having 32GB. Notice on the right of the page a set of coloured boxes. The “SIMLock and Warranty” check in green is free, however you need to register an account at this stage. After you’ve registered and logged in to your account, click on the “SIMLock and Warranty” button. It will prompt you to spread the word. Click on Check Apple phone details button to continue. It will take a few seconds to process your request and display if your phone is locked or unlocked (next to the SIM Lock field) as you can see in the screenshot below. What to do if you are locked There are many sources of information on the web about how to get your phone unlocked, and there are many websites which, for a fee, will provide an unlock code. The UK MVNO, GiffGaff, has an extensive information resource on this subject called Unlockapedia. Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes in the comments. Continue reading

Walmart to offer $60 discount on iPhone 5, iPhone 4S from tomorrow

Walmart to offer $60 discount on iPhone 5, iPhone 4S from tomorrow
Mashable reports that Walmart will be slashing the prices of iPhone 5 from Saturday, June 22. 16GB iPhone 5 will be available for $129 and 16GB iPhone 4S will be available for just $39, which works out to a discount of $60. This would again make Walmart the cheapest place to buy the iPhone in the U.S. Last time, Walmart had slashed the price of the iPhone 5 back in December, when it offered iPhone 5 for $127 and iPhone 4S for $47. Mashable reports their sources in Walmart have told them that this time round the discounted pricing will last indefinitely. Interestingly, this comes hot on the heels of Best Buy’s trade-in offer for free iPhone 5. It will be interesting to see how retailers like Best Buy will react to the price cuts. In January, Best Buy complained it lost $65,000 in one day trying to compete with Walmart on pricing. Walmart had slashed prices only on the 16GB iPhone 5 last time, so it remains to be seen if it will extend the discounts on the 32GB and 64GB models. We’re also assuming that the discounts will be available at Walmart’s supercenters, or about 3000 stores nationwide. We’ll update the post as soon as we get more information. New Nokia Lumia ad portrays iPhone users as Zombies [Video]
Nokia has started airing a new Nokia Lumia television ad called “Don’t flash, Amaze”, which portrays iPhone users as zombies. The ad shows a group of zombies stalking a man with an iPhone 5 taking photos with flash. It’s quite a clever ad as it tries to subtly suggest iPhone users are zombie like followers, unlike the Samsung ads. And at the same time it takes a dig at iPhone’s camera by suggesting that it turns people into zombies with LED flash. The ad ends by highlighting that the new Nokia Lumia 925 can be used to take the best pictures in any light, even without flash using the award-winning PureView technology. Check out the ad embedded below and let us know what you think in the comments. HT: iClarified Continue reading

Unlock your iPhone Android-style with PatternUnlock
If you are a fan of AndroidLock XT, the Android inspired jailbreak tweak that lets you unlock your iPhone by drawing a pattern, then you are going to love this jailbreak tweak, as it a much better version. PatternUnlock allows you to draw a pattern to unlock the device, instead of entering the mundane numeric or alphanumeric passcode. The jailbreak tweak offers tons of options, which can be configured via the Settings app (Settings -> PatternUnlock). You start off by turning on PatternUnlock, which will prompt you to enter a pattern that can be created by connecting any of the 9 dots. You will be prompted to re-enter the pattern to confirm it. That’s it, you’re all set. Now when you unlock your iPhone, you’ll be prompted to draw the pattern to unlock it instead of entering the passcode. If you’ve set a passcode, then you can tap on the keyboard button to the right of the Option bar to bypass PatternUnlock and enter the passcode instead. You can tap on the SOS button to make an Emergency call. You also get to select from 5 built-in themes (Settings > PatternUnlock > Select Theme). The developer has also provided a guide on how to create your own themes. You can also enable haptic feedback while using the tweak via the Settings app. You can set haptic feedback when you touch a point and also when you successful unlock the device. Your pattern information is stored using AES-256 bit encryption and the device’s keychain. The developer has disclosed that over 620,000 different patterns possible in PatterUnlock. The developer has also recommended setting a passcode in addition to PatternUnlock for extra security. Here’s a brief demo of the tweak in action: As you can see, PatternUnlock works beautifully and is compatible with lock screen tweaks such as LockInfo, IntelliScreenX, Unfold, JellyLock, Atom, Cydget etc. The tweak has been developed by Jonas Gessman. It is available for $1.99 on Cydia and you can purchase and install it using the download link provided below. It is compatible with iOS 6 or later and works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Let us know what you think in the comments. Warning: Please note that there seems to be bug, where the pattern doesn’t work for the first time when you reboot your device. If you have a passcode then you can bypass PatternUnlock to get past the lock screen. ➤ Download link (works only on a jailbroken device) Continue reading

AT&T drops iPhone 5 price to $99.99, iPhone 4S to $49.99
AT&T has launched a new promotion across its smartphone lineup that offers customers a 50 percent discount on the upfront price of a new device with a two year contract. This includes the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S, which means they are available for $99.99 and $49.99 respectively. The discount is only applicable on purchases made through AT&T’s online store, and includes free shipping and activation. (The discount will be applied automatically in cart.) The promotion is valid only on smartphones that cost between $0.99 to $199 so you won’t be able to get a 50 percent off on models with a storage capacity higher than 16GB. Walmart and Best Buy, too, are offering a discount on the iPhone 5, though it’s only $60, $50 respectively as compared to AT&T’s $100. We expect more carriers and retailers to offer discounts to clear inventory before the release of the next iPhone. Via: 9to5Mac Continue reading

iOS 7 Preview: The New Lock Screen

iOS 7 Preview: The New Lock Screen
In this iOS 7 Preview series, we’ll take an in-depth look at iOS 7′s new features and improvements. We start off by covering the Lock screen, which has been completely redesigned in iOS 7. So here’s what’s new: In iOS 7, the lock screen sports a minimalistic user interface, gone is the iconic slide to unlock slider button. Instead you’re greeted with just the “slide to unlock” text with a subtle animation that highlights the text that hints at the direction in which you need to slide to unlock the lock screen. You can swipe from left to right on the entire Lock screen to unlock the device. You no longer need to swipe on the button. The camera shortcut has also been moved to the bottom right corner, which has the same bounce animation when you tap on it from iOS 6 that subtly tells the user to swipe up to access the Camera app. In iOS 5 or earlier, the Status bar was either black or grey. In iOS 6, the color of the Status bar changed dynamically to match the tint of the app’s navigation bar. In iOS 7, the Status bar is transparent. It subtly removes the separation between software and hardware as the status bar now feels part of the app even though it continues to provide the status of various hardware components such as the cellular and Wi-Fi signal strength, battery, Bluetooth, Location services etc. You can finally access the Notification Center from the Lock screen. So you can quickly check the missed Notifications and the information provided in the Google Now-like Today view such as Weather, upcoming meetings, birthdays etc, without going through the hassle of unlocking the device. If you’re worried about privacy, then you have the option to disable the Notifications View and Today View from the Lock screen. There is an arrow at the top to indicate that Notification Center can be accessed from the Lock screen. You can also access the all-new Control Center from the Lock screen by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. However, the arrow just below the “slide to unlock” text that is meant for the Control Center, has led many users to the frustration of sliding up to unlock. Apple has also revamped the way notifications are displayed on the Lock screen. The notifications are displayed in plain text and are separated with a line divider. When you get a new notification, the incoming notification is highlighted while the older notifications are greyed out. You can still swipe them individually to launch the appropriate app. Passcode lock screen has also been completely redesigned. Instead of the passcode lock screen sliding up from the bottom, it slides from the left, trailing your swipe. The passcode takes up most of the screen and comes with circular keys if you have set the numeric passcode. The background is translucent and takes the tint of the lock screen wallpaper. You can now set static and dynamic wallpapers on the Lock screen. iOS 7 beta comes with two dynamic wallpapers, which animate in the background. You can also set panoramic wallpapers on the Lock screen. iOS 7 uses the gyroscope movement data to pan around the panoramic image. Apple has added a cool 3D parallax effect to the Lock screen and the Home screen. The 3D Parallax effect makes the “position or direction of an object appear different when viewed from different angles”. We cover this in detail when we cover the Home screen. If you set the timer in the Clock app, then it now displays the timer in the lock screen just below the clock. You can also stop the timer from the lock screen when its done, so you don’t have the Clock app open. You will finally be able to skip to any point in a song from the Lock screen as the music playback controls include a scrubber bar. “Tap to Snooze” for Alarm now shows up as a large, plain text notification on the Lock screen instead of a popup. If you tap to snooze, then the snooze timer is now displayed on the Lock screen, which is quite neat. The battery charging indicator on the lock screen has also been redesigned. Overall, the iOS 7 lock screen looks a lot more modern and comes with features such as quick access to Notification and Control Center that we’ve requested for a very long time. Let us know what you think of the iOS 7′s Lock screen. Do you like it? Continue reading

Get root access on iPhone 4 running iOS 7 beta without jailbreaking [Video]
Folks at AppAdvice have figured out a way to get root access to an iPhone 4 running iOS 7 beta 1 without jailbreaking the device. The procedure is fairly long involving quite a few steps and tools. For a detailed guide, click on the source link below or watch the video embedded below: They seem to be using an external ramdisk exploit for iPhone 4 to gain access to the file system. This isn’t anywhere close to a jailbreak, since that would require patching the kernel to get around code signing and other restrictions, which means there’s no Cydia and the ability to install jailbreak tweaks. You still can do some pretty cool things with just read write access to the entire filesystem, like modifying plist files, changing app icons, as shown in the video and so on. Let us know how it goes in the comments below. Source: AppAdvice Also see: How evasi0n, the iOS 6 jailbreak, works Continue reading

Third-party Lightning cable maker figures out a way to bypass iOS 7 authentication check
Few days back we reported that iOS 7 gives an annoying warning when you use uncertified Lightning cables or accessories. Folks at iPhone5mod, a third-party accessory company claims that they have cracked chips, which can bypass iOS 7 authentication functions. They’ve also published a video to demonstrate how their Lightning cables with these cracked chips no longer show the warning message when connected to an iPhone 5 running iOS 7 beta. We don’t think it was the smartest move on iPhone5mod’s part to release the video while iOS 7 is still in beta, as Apple could make the authentication mechanism even more robust in future beta versions. It is one of the reasons a jailbreak for beta versions is not released. Either way, we doubt this cat and mouse game between Apple and makers of uncertified MFi accessories will end anytime soon. Semi-Restore: The tool that lets you wipe your iPhone without losing the jailbreak released
Semi-Restore, the tool that promised to restore your iPhone to near stock condition without losing the jailbreak has been released over the weekend. While there have been tools like iLEX R.A.T that allowed you to wipe your jailbroken iPhone, CoolStar, the developer of Semi-Restore has made the process significantly easier with this one-click app. Here’s some of the things you should know about the Semi-Restore tool: What this does do Uninstalls all Cydia packages Fixes host file issues Erases all user data Fixes permissions Fixes activation issues Fixes iMessage/Facetime issues Fixes Safe mode issues randomly appearing Reinstalls Cydia (in case it was deleted) What this does not do Upgrade your iOS Version Downgrade your iOS Version Jailbreak your iOS Device Fix broken System Files You iOS device must be jailbroken on iOS 5 to iOS 6.1.2 to use the Semi-Restore tool. You can use it even when the SpringBoard is not visible. However, here are some important points to note before you proceed: SemiRestore supports Windows XP SP3 or higher, OS X 10.6 or higher, and Ubuntu 12.10 or higher (or the equivalent Linux). There may be a better way to fix your current problem. For example, to fix “Safe Mode” issues, you can just uninstall Mobile Substrate from Cydia. Like any other restore, make sure you backup your data if you want it later. Avoid using your iOS device or anything related to iTunes or XCode during the Semi-Restore. Why not actually go outside? This process can not and does not repair broken system files! Avoid all Siri Ports, as they are not only illegal (except for Spire on 5.0.1) but they also create problems and may potentially break system files (even Spire can cause this). Your device will respring or reboot several times during the Semi-Restore. This is perfectly normal, so don’t panic. You can download it from Semi-Restore’s website. It is available for Mac and Windows. The developer is also working on the Linux version and should release it shortly. If you get an error saying that “MSVCP100.dll” was not found while trying to launch the exe file, then download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributable package from Microsoft (32-bit, 64-bit). Semi-Restore seems like a great solution to fix the reboot loop problem if this solution doesn’t work, or you’re not able to identify the tweak that is causing it. As always, let us know how it goes. Please note we haven’t tried it, but we’ll test it shortly and publish a tutorial soon. Continue reading

Leaked photos of iPhone 5S reveals new A7 chip with 1GB RAM
MacRumors has published some more leaked photos, which they claim are of the next generation iPhone, unofficially dubbed iPhone 5S. Last week, the leaked photos of the iPhone 5S revealed that it will come with a bigger battery and dual-LED flash. However, it was difficult to figure out if the next generation iPhone would come with a variant of the A6 chip that powers the iPhone 5S or it will be powered by the next generation A-series chip, the A7. MacRumors speculates that based on the new photos, the iPhone 5S prototype seems to be powered by the next generation A7 chip. As seen in one photo, the chip carries an Apple model number of APL0698, suggesting that this is indeed intended to be branded as an A7 chip rather than a modification on the A6 chip found in the iPhone 5. The original A6 chip carried a model number of APL0598, with the A6X found in the fourth-generation iPad carrying an APL5598 model number, demonstrating how Apple varies the first digit for members of a given A-series family and increments the second digit when transitioning to a new family.  Apple’s pattern of model numbers can be seen even more clearly in the A5, which has seen several different variations over its lifetime. That chip debuted with an APL0498 model number, with a later die shrink carrying an APL2498 model number. Yet another version of the A5 appeared earlier this year in a tweaked Apple TV, with that chip carrying an APL7498 model number. MacRumors also reports that new iPhone 5S chip indicates that it has Elpida DRAM, and apparently only 1GB RAM like the iPhone 5. The report also points out the photos are probably of an early prototype as it seems to have been assembled as early as December 2012. The new iPhone 5S chip also has a K1A0062 identifier, which could indicate that the chip was made by TSMC instead of Samsung, as chips manufactured by Samsung typically start with an “N”. This is interesting as we’ve heard earlier today that Apple and TSMC deal is now complete. MacRumors has also published a more close-up photo of the rear camera with dual-LED flash. According to rumors, iPhone 5S could feature a 12-megapixel camera with an improved HDR and night shooting (thanks to the dual-LED flash). Apple is widely expected to unveil iPhone 5S along with the cheaper iPhone in September. Via: MacRumors Continue reading

iOS 7 will let you secretly take Snapchat screenshots
In iOS 7, active touches are no longer canceled when the user takes a screenshot. MacRumors points out that this will allow users to secretly take screenshots in apps such as SnapChat, Facebook Poke etc. This minor change has a number of implications for several apps that rely on screenshots to notify users of unwanted behavior, such as Snapchat and Facebook Poke. When a user opens a Snapchat photo in the app, a finger is required on the screen to hold the photo open while viewing the picture. The act of taking a screenshot interrupts the picture viewing and closes the photo, which is the method that Snapchat uses to detect an “illegal” screenshot, thereby notifying the sender of the photo that a snapshot has been saved. As the report points out, in iOS 7, taking a screenshot no longer closes the photo viewing window in SnapChat as it doesn’t interrupt on-screen touches, so no notification is sent when a screenshot is taken in iOS 7. Developers of apps like SnapChat have used screenshot detection to keep the photos private, though they have been workarounds to bypass it. They will now have to figure out a new way to detect screenshots. You can check out what’s new in iOS 7 beta 2 here. Via: MacRumors Continue reading
